Russian (ISO 639-3: rus) is the Slavic language with the largest number of speakers. Together with Ukrainian, Belarusian and Ruthenian, it forms a group of East Slavic languages. The standard Russian language is based on the Moscow dialect.
About 180 million people speak Russian as their mother tongue, of which about 130 million live in the Russian Federation. It is the official language in Russia, Belarus (in addition to Belarusian), Kazakhstan (in addition to Kazakh), Kyrgyzstan (in addition to Kyrgyz). In these and other countries of the former Soviet Union, Russian is the mother tongue of part of the population and to a greater or lesser extent the language of public life. It is also widely used in culture, science and technology. Taking into account the number of speakers of Russian as a second language, it is used by about 300 million people.
