Arabic (in Arabic: العربية, al ʿarabiyya, or sometimes simply عربي, arabi) is a Semitic language spoken by about 380 million people in several countries.

The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters. Arabic is written from right to left. The order of numbers in numbers is the same as in (for example) Dutch. Many important religious, mathematical, philosophical and astrological works are written in Arabic.

The language’s political, cultural and religious significance was officially recognized by the United Nations in 1973. Arabic then became the sixth language of the UN alongside Mandarin, English, Russian, French and Spanish.
